Stepping Stones are interactive outdoor musical instruments designed to bring playfulness, sound, and surprise to walkways, plazas, sensory paths, cycleways, and play areas. Each unit encourages movement and exploration, creating a multi-sensory experience that captures attention and enhances public spaces.
Each of the six square Stepping Stones conceals a musical chord beneath its surface. When stepped on, jumped on, pushed, or wheeled across, the stone activates a harmonious major or minor triad made up of three hidden bells. Users can experiment by stepping on different spots to isolate individual bell tones, or by jumping with both feet to play the full chord. Every bell produces a pure, long-sustaining note that becomes more resonant with greater force.
As standard, Stepping Stones feature a durable, non-slip, anti-corrosion coating in vibrant, rainbow‑scale colours. For designers seeking a more natural or integrated look, Stepping Stones can also be supplied without the coating, allowing the top surface to be finished with materials that blend seamlessly into the surrounding landscape - ideal for creating surprising, “hidden” musical interactions.
Important Notes:
There are six Stepping Stones available in six chords - each with its own distinct sound.
Stepping Stones cannot be installed on loose surfaces such as engineered wood fibre.
Earlier versions (such as those shown in the video) included note names on the top surface. These have now been removed to ensure global accessibility - recognising international differences in musical notation - and to give customers greater flexibility, such as selecting multiple stones in the same colour while assigning each a different sound.
